Language is not on our side; there is only one word for design, while there are many interpretations for this word. Design is a very broad spectrum that ranges from art-installation to industrial, medical, engineering, ... Design includes product, furniture, textile, illustration, services and much more. In recent years, when people talk about design today, they often focus on a small specific interpretation of the word. This often involves the conceptual, almost philosophical interpretation of the word "design" where the design piece is considered a work of art.
Many start-up designers are looking for their place in this spectrum. Is how we do things now still relevant in a changed society? Am I an artist who designs for other artists or do I want to go for a broader impact with my designs and break out of the designer world? Is this how I am forced into a larger scale and thus contribute to the problem? Shouldn't we better stop designing? The industry is riddled with many contradictions that often block a designer. How can we as designers deal with this blockage?
In this context, we are meeting collectively with different designers from different contexts to talk, brainstorm, philosophise, think, do, ... In the hope of finding answers to these unanswerable questions.
