In the Broeltoren this fall, you will find complete peace of mind. Flemish artist Stijn D'Hondt reveals fifteen stories of loss in an audiovisual manner. The works of art are based on the heartbeats of interlocutors who each experienced a different form of loss. The interactive exhibition Lost Heartbeats takes you into the most universal feeling of all: letting go and learning to hold on differently.
Frankness as a taboo breaker.
Research shows that you can experience different kinds of heart pain during a grieving process. That pain is not only felt but also visible in your heart curve. These abnormalities were the inspiration for Lost Heartbeats, Stijn D'Hondt's new art line. During a candid conversation with people experiencing a loss, Stijn recorded their heartbeats. Using these unique heartbeats, he created nostalgic landscapes through data visualization and personal details from the conversations.
The stories and artworks are being shown to the general public for the first time. As a visitor, you will be challenged to listen and look into the hearts of figureheads and yourself.
With this project, Stijn D'Hondt wants to break the taboo around grieving and make it discussable. 'It's not just about death, I also wanted to bring stories about heartbreak, saying goodbye to a well-functioning body, a healthy planet, a pet or a homeland. It's just the variety of loss I want to bring attention to.'
