SO3 stands for seating object no.3 and refers to the mathematical name of a 3D rotational movement.
The design for SO3 arose from Casper Pellens' search for the role of craftsmanship within the contemporary industrialised context of furniture design. SO3 explores this interaction between craft and industry. Manual actions form the uniqueness and starting point of this final work in the form of a steel mould. In addition, the standardised and industrial production technique of rotational moulding magnifies initial imperfections. As a result, the accuracy of handwork is highlighted by the industrial process. The rotational moulding process results in a hollow stool, which is efficient and durable in material use. The stackable stool transcends its functionality as a sculpture.
